Xenobiotic breakdown by mixed cultures.

چکیده

Conclusion The interactions of methanogens with other organisms in natural habitats are various. At a metabolic level methanogens may compete for substrates with other bacteria and are involved in mutualistic interactions with non-methanogenic bacteria. Mutualism between methanogens and protozoa also occurs and, in addition, methanogens interact physically as episymbionts of rumen ciliates. Knowledge of ‘mixed culture’ interactions, in nature and in the laboratory, is relevant to the technological application of methanogenic mixed cultures in anaerobic digestion because metabolic interactions and physical associations of bacteria in films and granules determine the performance of digesters.

Expression of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in cultured rat tracheal epithelial cells.

Rat tracheal epithelial (RTE) cells were cultured on membrane support with and without retinoic acid (RA). In early (6-day-old) cultures, the epithelium is a monolayer or bilayer of undifferentiated cells and secretes little mucuslike product either in the absence or presence of RA. In late (12- to 15-day-old) cultures, the epithelium differentiates as a mucociliary epithelium in the presence o...

Attenuation by l-thyroxine of oxidant-induced gut epithelial damage

Objective(s): Severe injuries are often associated with tissue hypothyroidism, elevated damaging mediators in circulation, and broken gut epithelial barrier.  However, the relationships between the hypothyroid state and gut epithelial damage are largely unknown.  Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of L-thyroxine (T4) on in vitro models of intact and ...

Culturing oil sands microbes as mixed species communities enhances ex situ model naphthenic acid degradation

Oil sands surface mining for bitumen results in the formation of oil sands process water (OSPW), containing acutely toxic naphthenic acids (NAs). Potential exists for OSPW toxicity to be mitigated by aerobic degradation of the NAs by microorganisms indigenous to the oil sands tailings ponds, the success of which is dependent on the methods used to exploit the metabolisms of the environmental mi...

Functional xenobiotic metabolism and efflux transporters in trout hepatocyte spheroid cultures

Prediction of xenobiotic fate in fish is important for the regulatory assessment of chemicals under current legislation. Trout hepatocyte spheroids are a promising in vitro model for this assessment. In this investigation, the gene expression and function for xenobiotic metabolism and cellular efflux were characterised. Using fluorescence, transport and real time PCR analysis, the expression an...
